Why do repeated glances work?
Over a century ago, Hermann Ebbinghaus showed something we all feel: new things fade fast. The curve drops steeply within hours to days. But there's an antidote — every time you meet the information again before you've fully forgotten it, the forgetting curve flattens. The memory lasts longer, and each repetition makes it stronger.
The key is the gap. A large meta-analysis by Cepeda and colleagues (2006), pooling hundreds of experiments, found that reviewing material with time between sessions (distributed practice) consistently produced better retention than reviewing it back-to-back (massed practice). Cramming the night before an exam is massed practice — it feels productive and evaporates fast.
